Meniere’s Disease and Tinnitus

Also known as idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops, Meniere’s disease is a disorder of the ear. Read on to know more about this disease.

Meniere’s Disease

Named after the French physician Prosper Meniere, Meniere’s disease is a problem that is associated with the fluid balancing regulating system in the inner ear. Generally, it is defined as the symptom complex of episodic vertigo (sensation of whirling and spinning), tinnitus (ringing, roaring and hissing that usually occurs in one ear), aural pressure (feeling of pressure in the concerned ear) and fluctuating hearing loss. There is a pattern involved here, which is usually a sensation of pressure build up in one ear with increasing tinnitus and a drop in hearing. After this happens, the vertigo comes quite suddenly and may last for a few hours to several days. It is only once the vertigo attack is over that the hearing improves.
experts on menieres disease
What are the symptoms associated with Meniere’s disease?

One of the most weakening symptoms of Meniere’s disease is vertigo, which can lead to vomiting, severe nausea and sweating. All of these symptoms can come with a little or no warning at all.

Apart from this, some individuals who suffer from Meniere’s disease have attacks that begin with tinnitus, a loss of hearing or a feeling of fullness or pressure in the affected ear. All these symptoms are experienced at varying frequencies, intensities and durations. Some other symptoms associated with Meniere’s disease are headache, abdominal discomfort and diarrhea.

How is the diagnosis for Meniere’s disease made?

To make a diagnosis, the physician will take a history of the duration, frequency, severity and character of your attacks. He/she might also inquire about whether the hearing loss has been changing and if you have had tinnitus or fullness on either of both ears. The physician would also like to know whether you have a history of mumps, syphilis, inflammation of the eyes, an autoimmune disorder or allergy or ear surgery in the past. You might also be questioned about your general health, such as whether you have diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and thyroid or any neurologic or emotional disorders. Once the physician has completed the questioning, he/she will conduct diagnostic tests to check you balance functions and hearing.

The tests may include:

Test for Balance

To test balance the physician may perform Electronystagmograph (ENG). In this procedure, recording electrodes are placed near the eyes in a darkened room. After they have been placed in the above manner, warm and cool air is gently introduced into each ear canal. Using this procedure, the eye movements can be used to test the balance system since the eyes and ears work in coordination through the nervous system. Rotational testing or balance platform may also be used to evaluate the balance system.

Test for Hearing

To test hearing an audiometric examination is used. This test typically indicates a sensory type of hearing loss in the affected ear. If the ear is affected, speech discrimination is often diminished.

Other Tests

Some other tests that may be conducted to make the diagnosis, they are:

  • Computer Tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Electrocochleography (ECoG) which is used to indicate increased inner ear fluid pressure in a few cases of Meniere’s disease
  • Auditory brain response (ABR) which is a computerized test used to test the hearing nerves and brain pathway

What is the treatment for Meniere’s disease?

Sadly there is no cure for Meniere’s disease, but irrespective of that the symptoms can be controlled successfully by reducing the body’s retention of fluids through dietary changes (which include low-salt or salt-free and no caffeine or alcohol) or medication. Eliminating tobacco and reducing stress levels also help lessen the severity of the symptoms.

Apart for the treatments mentioned above there are different surgical procedures that have been advocated for patients who have persistent, debilitating vertigo from Meniere’s disease. One such surgical treatment is Labyrinthectomy, in which the inner ear sense organ is removed. This procedure can control vertigo but is reserved for patients who have nonfunctional hearing in the affected ear. Vestibular neurectomy; is another such treatment in which a nerve from the affected ear is selectively severed. This procedure usually controls vertigo while preserving the hearing but also carries risks associated with the surgery.

What should I do when I get an attack?

During an attack, it is advisable to lie flat on a surface keeping your eyes aimed at an object that is stationary. Do not eat or drink much at this stage. When you feel that the symptoms have gone away, get up slowly. At this time you may want to sleep for several hours. Remember to call your doctor if you keep vomiting for more than 24 hours and are not able to keep down any liquids.

Tinnitus Hearing aid-Tips For users

Hearing aids for tinnitus

If you suffer from tinnitus, you are well aware that certain pitches may negatively affect you via the hearing aid you are wearing.
In this case, it is necessary to adjust the compression dial and setting of the hearing aid to prevent loud noises from entering within the canal of the ear.
what is a tinnitus hearing aid
In addition it is vital to utilize the real ear measurement method because everyone’s ear will be different in shape and dimensions- in this case we are addressing the ear canal as well as the shape of the ear drum, and other factors. In general, those who have smaller ear canals will be more sensitive to these "loud noises" as opposed to someone who has a larger ear canal.

The best way to go about this is to speak with your audiologist on how to adjust it properly so it doesn’t irritate your ear canal any more than it already has.

Normally it will take a bit of time before the new settings will "kick in" and is when you will notice whether the calibration is on target or is a bit off. Again, having some professional assistance is the way to go with this and other matters with regards to your hearing aid issues and concerns.

Ear Wax Removal Candles

Ear Candles -do They Really Work For Tinnitus?

Have you heard of candling before? Some tinnitus sufferers have reported that it can help with their symptoms. It is a controversial technique also known as ear candling and also candle therapy. The ‘therapists’, as they liked to be called, announced that this treatment was taught and handed down generation by generation by way of the Hopi Indians. The Tribal Council denounced these beliefs and also stated that they have never practiced nor included ear candles in their medical treatments. The tribal council also announced that in no uncertain terms do they wish to be related to this method. They stated this in March of 1995 but the practice of using ear candles is still used today. Actually, some people swear by this method as they feel there has been great benefit for their ears after their treatments.
candle ear wax remover
What is the ear candling method?

Hypothetically, the practice involving ear candles will clear the passage way of the troubled ear and possibly assist other internal problems you may be experiencing. All this is accomplished by planting a lighted candle in your ear but we do recommend not putting the lighted end in the ear. Well, it had to be said! To do this you will need to keep the ear candle vertical while the patient lies on their side. So as not to get burnt by the hot wax it is a good idea to affix a portion of paper to the ear candles. The candle needs to burn down to approximately two inches form the patient’s ear. This process can take from 45 minutes to just over and hour although it does depend on the therapist involved. The theory on this method is that a vacuum will be created by the burning ear candles and this will cure the ear problem even though this has not been scientifically proven.

Now we will need to extinguish the candle safely with either a saucer of water or something similar as there is always a chance of getting burned withoutthe proper protection. Either pieces of the burnt wick or melting wax can create short but painful burns. Of course, according to the therapists, there are great benefits from using ear candles. They have decided that someone with a healthy ear can even feel the positive effects when using ear candles. While this is a not a scientific claim the therapists claim there is a distinct energy force that goes down the candle to cure the affected ear.

Is there anything that is 100% positive regarding ear candles?

The practice of doctoring with ear candles is considered by some professionals to be only a pseudoscience, due to the fact many patients receiving this treatment decided they were feeling better after repetive treatments. Non believers totally agree that there is just no way for ear candles to make anything to flow out of the ears. It is believed if anything does happen relating to drainage that it is in the patients mind by the power of suggestion. Conclusively researchers believe this method cannot offer any relief for the ears as the ear candle has no scientific way to melt the ear wax. As far as the vacuum goes the chances are quire slim of it actually happening. Good advice is to go see an ear specialist or your family doctor for any and all ear problems. For more ideas and treatments for Tinnitus click here.

Aggressive Treatment For Tinnitus

Aggressive Treatment For Tinnitus

Is tinnitus driving you mad? Destroying your life? An aggressive treatment for tinnitus program can help you get it back. I look at the causes of tinnitus, the mainstream treatments that are used, and the poor results of using these treatments. I also outline a unique aggressive treatment for tinnitus program that you do from the comfort of home, and, which many folks around the world have successfully turned to for a cure.
pulsatile tinnitus symptoms
Before I describe the aggressive treatment for tinnitus program, the first thing to understand is that tinnitus is a symptom of some underlying problem, not a stand-alone affliction. In other words, you can’t have tinnitus without something else being wrong with you.

The causes of tinnitus are varied, but the root cause is normally a problem with the inner ear and / or the auditory nerve. Acting together these convert the external sounds to special signals that are carried to the brain. The brain then converts them to sounds that you hear.

Some other causes associated with your ears are; middle ear infection (glue ear), other ear infections, middle ear tumour, noise damage, meniere’s desease (inner ear disorder), blocked eustachian tube (middle ear to back of nose), impacted ear wax, otosclerosis (stiffening of middle ear bones), hearing loss.

But there are some medical problems that can cause tinnitus also, such as; hardening of the arteries, old age, medications (e.g. antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, aspirin), stress, head injury, allergies, whiplash, high blood pressure, anemia, and, diet etc.

The symptoms of tinnitus are the "sounds" that you hear. You will have your own description but they have been described as, ringing, whooshing, steam escaping, hissing, clicking, ticking etc.And there are two types of the sounds of tinnitus; "subjective" and "objective".

Subjective sound is where only you can hear it, and, objective sound where your doctor can also hear it using a special instrument. Tinnitus is usually associated with subjective sound.

So what about traditional medical aggressive treatment for tinnitus? Well, first you have surgery; but, as with much surgery, this is only used as a treatment of last resort since it can have complications.

You can also have drug-based treatment such as antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-anxiety, anticonvulsants, etc.

Then there’s other mainstream treatment such as; hearing aids so that your tinnitus seem less; tinnitus maskers that, by producing a range of sounds, attempt to mask / cover-up your tinnitus; therapies such as yoga, acupuncture, meditation, hypnosis, etc; and something called biofeedback which are exercises to relax your head and neck muscles to try to reduce the tinnitus effect.

However, the success rate of traditional mainstream aggressive treatment for tinnitus is very low indeed. It is reckoned that about 93% of all sufferers never get any relief from their symptoms.

This is a real cause for concern since it’s not just the annoying symptoms of tinnitus you have to worry about, it’s the affect they have on you. The constant ringing in your ears causes sleepless nights, fatigue, stress, depression, it affects your work, and, even your relationships.

Because of this many folks at their wits end have discovered an alternative aggressive treatment for tinnitus program that has worked for them. Just a few minutes everyday at home, or, in the workplace was all that it took. And all without any drugs.

And because there are 11 proven techniques used to get rid of tinnitus in this program, they were able to customize their treatment to suit their individual needs.

This unique aggressive treatment for tinnitus program was developed as a result of an intensive 2 year research project by tinnitus researcher and former sufferer Geoff Barker.

Tested on some 40 fellow tinnitus sufferers during its development, it has proved to have a 80% success rate. Now compare that with the 93% of tinnitus victims who never get relief using traditional mainstream treatments, and you can see just how effective his program is.

Tinnitus TRT

Tinnitus- Basic Treatment And Therapy

Tinnitus is a disorder that affects millions of individuals all around the world. Commonly people suffering from tinnitus, also known as ringing ears, find it hard to concentrate and lead a normal life. The reason for this is that in some cases the ringing of the ears is so loud that people suffering from tinnitus often develop some sort of sleeping disturbance, most commonly insomnia.

In some cases tinnitus can be cured naturally without the need of any specific treatment, but for others treatment is the only way of ever curing it. Nowadays there are many effective treatments available that are successful for certain cases, but may not work for others, it all depends on the nature of the tinnitus.

Shown below is a list of some of the more commonly used tinnitus treatments used.
tinnitus retraining therapy trt
Tinnitus retraining therapy
Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is a treatment commonly known as, habituation therapy, whereby a patient uses a combination of tinnitus retraining and sound enrichment techniques to reduce the perception of the noises caused by the tinnitus. This method might take some time to master but because there is no official 100 percent effective way of treating tinnitus, many patients are whiling to give this method a try.

Cognitive Therapy
Cognitive therapy is different approach to tinnitus treatment. Basically what’s pretended is a change in the way the patients reacts to the tinnitus rather than trying to cure it. The therapy requires that the patient together with the doctor indentify the negative impact of tinnitus.

Masking
Masking is a method utilized not to cure tinnitus but rather control its effects. A devise commonly resembling a hearing aid, that is designed to produce low-level sound, is introduced into the ear to eliminate the perception of noise.

Hearing Aids
Some patients with severe tinnitus may in some cases benefit from the use of a hearing aid. By using such a device, the sounds of speech are brought above background tinnitus noise, making it easier for the person to hear other people. Hearing aids could also be used as a means of introducing white noise for blocking chronic tinnitus when sleeping.

Medicines and vitamins
There are some vitamins and a wide range of medicines that can help cure tinnitus. Some of Vitamins include Niacin, Lecithin, Zinc and Magnesium. Medicines that could prove effective include Anti-Depressants, Tranquilizers, and Muscle Relaxants, Alprazolam (Xanax), Klonopin, Anti-Convulsants, Intravenous Lidocaine and Anti-Histamine. Before starting a treatment using any sort of pharmaceutical drugs it is always imperative that a specialized doctor be consulted first.

Biofeedback
Biofeedback is a therapy utilized to teach patients how to relax their muscles and automatic body functions. The main idea is to help people manage stress, which can worsen tinnitus, by changing the way the body responds to it. People using this method have reported that this method if done correctly can drastically decrease tinnitus noise.

Many other forms of treatment are available but because tinnitus can radically vary from person to person only an otolaryngologists can help decide which solution is best suited for each case.

Tinnitus And Stress

Nearly a third of the population suffers from Tinnitus; ringing in the ears. And, of that third about 25% percent have it seriously enough to seek medical attention. So, for the millions of tinnitus patients; the ones who are suffering on a daily basis, the focus of this article is on you. I’ll be sharing with you an amazing secret which will control your tinnitus volume like nothing else out there. The catch is; it may just be the hardest thing you’ve ever had to learn.
stress related tinnitus
It’s hard because most people do not understand even what it is that’s making your ringing louder; let alone how to deal with it. You hear it talked about all the time. Many people know the symptoms of it but, the vast majority of people have no idea how to deal with it. And, believe me, it’s your worst enemy as a tinnitus patient. What is it? What’s this dreaded monster?

STRESS!

I can feel you getting stressed out just by reading it. But, by far the #1 way to reduce your tinnitus volume is; ‘Get rid of your stress.’

REDUCING STRESS = REDUCING VOLUME

Why is this so hard to do? Well for starters, most people have no concept of what stress is. Most people think it’s the symptoms ie: anxiety, anxiousness, being up-tight, feeling anger, resentment etc. The truth is the symptoms are not stress. And therefore, once you learn the real definition of stress, only then can you learn to rid yourself of it. So, here’s the definition of stress…

Stress is; ‘The amount of energy you put into resisting your situation.’

It’s not the situation that’s causing you stress, it’s the energy you put into resisting the situation. So, how do you not resist it? Well, there’s really only 2 non-resistant choices you can make in any stressful situation and that is to either; a) accept it or b) remove yourself from the situation. Do you know how many people misunderstand this concept? Staying and fighting only makes the stress worse because you’re acting out of fear and your ego wants to win. You cannot win, especially at the expense of others.

So, let’s talk about tinnitus and stress. Tinnitus actually causes stress because of the constant ringing in your ears. The worse part about this is; when you’re stressed out your tinnitus volume goes up and you get more stressed right? That’s why tinnitus is such a hard thing because you’re constantly caught in a vicious loop of stress and constant ringing. That’s no way to live, is it?

How do you reduce the stress? Stop hating tinnitus. That’s a very hard concept for your to accept but the fact is hating tinnitus causes more stress because you’re resisting it. Don’t! Tinnitus is your friend. It’s here to tell you something about your life that you don’t already like. It’s here to tell you that you need to be taking better care of yourself. You need to be doing what you want to do instead of what others expect of you.

Acceptance of tinnitus is the key to healing. When you accept your tinnitus you will reduce the stress and anxiety that it causes and therefore you will reduce your volume. Remember, reducing stress = reducing volume. Guaranteed!

Knowing the definition of stress will help you a lot and knowing that you need to accept tinnitus will help but, it won’t give you the weapons you need to win the battle. I can’t teach you that in one email. That’s a journey you’ll need to take over a period of time. But, there’s no better time than the ‘now’ to start anything. When it’s 2 weeks from now it will be NOW! So, it will always be now and therefore you can only start, NOW! Are you confused now?

What I’m really trying to say is this; I know you can get a handle on this thing if you just make a clear conscious choice to learning everything you can about acceptance. If you don’t try, you’ll still be completely stressed out and going crazy with Tinnitus many years from now. You don’t really want that now… do you?

Melatonin Medication For Tinnitus

Melatonin Can Help Improve Your Sleep And Your Tinnitus.

A daily supplement of Melatonin may help improve your tinnitus and sleep patterns. It certainly has in my case since I’ve been taking it over the last 6 months after having extremely loud Tinnitus for the last 14 years.

Melatonin is actually a hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland which is situated in the centre of your brain. Melatonin which is stimulated by the onset of darkness at nighttime is a very important factor in the human body’s circadian cycle or your internal body clock.
tinnitus therapie
In most people melatonin is produced to help regulate our sleeping and waking cycles but scientistcs have found that as people get older the amount produced is smaller and that this may be the reason why young people have less problems with their sleeping patterns than older ones.

Other studies have shown that melatonin has also helped people with tinnitus who develop irregular sleep patterns and does not have the hazards and side effects of prescription sleeping pills. Melatonin can also strengthen your immune system as well as reduce the free radicals in your body.

Who Can Take Melatonin?

Melatonin is like a natural nightcap and people with tinnitus can really benefit from using it regularly. Others people such as travellers, those suffering from mild sleep disorders and the aged have found that it has restored their circadian rythms and sleep cycles as well as giving them lots of energy.

The right dosage shold be prescribed by your Doctor and will differ from person to person. Normally Tinnitus sufferers can start with a smaller dosage taken before bed-time each night and then work your way up to larger doses if required.

Are there any side-effects to taking melatonin?

According to various studies about 10 percent of people who have taken melatonin under trials have reported symptoms such as bad dreams, headaches, morning fuzziness, mild depression, and a lowered sex drive.

Personally I have not experienced any of these side effects however this is why you should see and consult with your Doctor before beginning any trial of melatonin to help with your sleep patterns.

Should certain people avoid it?

Yes people such as women who are pregnant, nursing young infants, those with severe allergies, people with cancers such as leukemia or lymphoma and lastly healthy children as they are already producing plenty of melatonin naturally.

Is melatonin safe?

Melatonin is very safe and is one of the least toxic substances known and there have been very few complaints about the drug to official authorities after extensive testings. These complaints were mostly to do with melatonin causing drowsiness and a slower reaction times in certain individuals.

When should the dosage be administered?

Melatonin should be taken just before you go to bed. About half an hour is recommended. If you are traveling on a long journey or plane trip you can take a dose of melatonin before your flight.

It’s important you take it at regular times as melatonin has a significant role in setting your body’s daily clock or circadian rythms.

What are the usual ingredients in melatonin capsules or tablets?

Pure Melatonin plus standard tablet fillers and binders such as Di-Calcium Phosphate Anhydrous, Stearic Acid, Micro-Crystallin Cellulose, Silicon Dioxide, and Magnesium Stearate

Melatonin combined with a Tinnitus masking soundtrack during the night is the best way I have found to to ensure I get a great night’s sleep and it’s one of my top recommended ways of dealing with Tinnitus and sleeping issues.

Depending on it’s cause it may last for anything from hours to years. You might be surprised to learn that tinnitus is actually a symptom of other conditions that you may have, and, that around 93% of sufferers never get relief from tinnitus.

The causes of your tinnitus are things like inner ear / auditory nerve damage, ear infections, ear wax, middle ear tumour (benign), otosclerosis, noise polution, meniere’s desease (inner ear disorder), blocked eustachian tube, etc. These are the things that could determine how long will tinnitus last.

Other potential causes are old age, hardening of the arteries, head trauma, whiplash, some medications, stress, allergies, hypertension, anemia, diet. Again, these may determine how long will tinnitus last.

There are a variety of treatments out there, but given that 93% of sufferers don’t get any relief they just don’t seem to be effective enough. And these folks are left wondering how long will tinnitus last?

Typical treatments are; medications (antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-anxiety tablets, etc.); hearing aid or tinnitus maskers; and complementary programs such as yoga, meditation and acupuncture.

Another option is invasive surgery, but this is rarely used, and, only as an absolutely last resort.

Because of the lack of success of mainstream treatments, and fed up with wondering just how long will tinnitus last? more and more folks are turning to natural, home-based treatments such as that devised by Geoff Barker, a tinnitus researcher and former sufferer.

He has developed a home-based program using 11 solid techniques that he discovered after years of research, testing and development. Users are able to build a treatment program that is matched to their individual needs by using some or all of his 11 proven techniques.

According to Geoff his home-based program has a success rate of 80% with even the other 20% reporting that their tinnitus is less frequent than before.

Cures For Tinnitus

Cures for Tinnitus

Unfortunately there is no cure or magic pill that will help the people who suffer from tinnitus to no longer hear the noises in their head. The good news is tinnitus is receiving more attention and new research is currently taking place in an effort to find a tinnitus cure. While scientists continue to search for the cure, tinnitus sufferers may find comfort in knowing that in some cases, tinnitus can be quieted.
cure to tinnitus
When the underlying cause of tinnitus can be identified, it may be possible to cure tinnitus. For instance, if tinnitus is related to a disease of the ear and the disease is treated and cured, the tinnitus symptoms will generally disappear. Some would say their tinnitus has been cured because the symptoms have been eliminated. Others would claim their health problem was cured, thus eliminating the tinnitus symptoms.

Some people have excessive ear wax that blocks outside sound from coming in. By having a physician or audiologist remove the wax, the source of the tinnitus is also removed. Depending on who you talk to, ear wax removal may be seen as a cure for tinnitus. Those who experience elimination of tinnitus symptoms through ear wax removal claim they feel as if they’ve been cured. A natural tinnitus cure if you will.

Many people with severe hearing loss have found tinnitus relief with the help of a device called a cochlear implant. Not only does the cochlear implant help these individuals hear the world around them, it also helps diminish the tinnitus. While this is no cure, it has proven to provide effective relief from severe tinnitus symptoms.

Drug therapy can provide relief from tinnitus. However, certain drugs are known to cause tinnitus and there are other risks involved. It’s always wise to thoroughly discuss all tinnitus treatment options with your professional healthcare provider. Certain treatments intended to cure tinnitus have, in some cases, increased the intensity and frequency of tinnitus. These treatments which include medications, surgical procedures and electrical stimulation can in no way be regarded as a tinnitus cure.

Masking is a technique that has proven successful in the treatment of tinnitus. Masking is a non-medical option used to reduce or "mask" unwanted noise. tinnitus maskers are worn like a hearing aid to produce a neutral white sound. Over 60% of patients with severe tinnitus report relief. Masking devices are not suitable for everyone and you should consult a qualified audiologist before using one. Again, whilst masking has helped some people it cannot cure tinnitus.

Biofeedback is a treatment for tinnitus that teaches people how to control certain body functions including pulse, muscle tension and skin temperature. The goal when using biofeedback for tinnitus treatment is to decrease stress and anxiety levels that may be contributing to tinnitus. Biofeedback has a 25-year history of successful treatment for pain and stress-related disorders. Some individuals have espoused biofeedback as a cure for tinnitus.

Natural Remedies To Cure Tinnitus

Alternative practices such as chiropractic, osteopathy, homeopathy and acupuncture, have only been studied in a few cases and none have ever claimed to cure tinnitus. The results show these practices oftentimes improve a person’s general well-being, which in turn helps them deal with tinnitus symptoms more effectively. Again one has to come to the conclusion that these alternative treatments for tinnitus are not a tinnitus cure but can provide some relief in certain instances.

Homeopathy is to date the most effective in the treatment of tinnitus but cannot cure tinnitus. So at this stage if you are looking for effective tinnitus relief homeopathic tinnitus treatments are the best bet because there is no cure for tinnitus right now.
